In 1809 a palace revolution had overthrown King Gustav IV of Sweden and had put the aged, childless, and sickly Charles XIII on the throne. The Danish prince Christian August had been elected crown prince but died suddenly in 1810, and the Swedes turned to Napoleon for advice.
In 1810, when Jean Baptiste was 47 years old and Marshal of France, he was elected Crown Prince of Sweden and adopted the royal name Karl XIV Johan.
The House of Bernadotte is the royal family of Sweden, founded there in 1818 by King Charles XIV John of Sweden. It was also the royal family of Norway between 1818 and 1905. Its founder was born in Pau in southern France as Jean Bernadotte.
So there you have the story how Sweden inherited involuntarily the French culture. Our bakery culture has close ties to the French, at the same time we are known for our healthy crisp breads and rye breads.
As it is widely know, the Cinnamon roll was a creation made by Swedish bakers . Every year Swedes celebrate the cinnamon roll on October 4th each year. It started in 1920, but after butter became more available 1950, the bakers to the roll to another level.
